Flooring adds character to your home. Taking the decision is indeed difficult as there are innumerable varieties in the market, hardwood, carpets, tiles or vinyl. There are a few primary concerns before you take the final decision. You should consider the durability and the expenses involved. Another important factor is how stain resistant it will be and where the flooring is to be placed.

A child’s playroom has to be very strong and resistant to repeated thrashings and toys being dragged over them. A typical hardwood floor may not be able to withstand it. To ensure the safety of your child you might want to have a slightly softer variation so that it does not hurt your child. A carpet would be too susceptible to stains. A family of kids will have different demands than the elderly or the retired. Those who suffer from allergy and asthma will need a dust free home environment.

Your living room may have flooring that is more visually appealing and less functional. Here you can have a soft rug or carpet according to the way that you want to design it. Places like kitchen and bathroom are used continuously. For such places a centerpiece would be ideal. The floors should be able to be cleaned thoroughly. Therefore tiles or textured vinyl would not be a good choice as a lot of dust and germs accumulate between the crevices. These are also quite difficult to be kept clean all the time.

Choosing the right flooring also depends on the type of room décor that you want to have. The floor should compliment and supplement the entire setting. A country design would look good with a simple wood floor but not with a southwestern style tile. In the same way floors should also vary in kitchens and bedrooms. The color and style should match the place where it is being put. The choice of floors is so very important because it reflects you and your family.

There are a variety of floors that you can choose from hardwood, laminate, bamboo, vinyl, sheet, tiles and many others. You should also keep a few points in mind before you buy a floor. The installation should be done professionally as improper installation done on an uneven surface causes floors to wear badly. A plain colored floor will show the blemishes more than the patterned ones. So it is better to choose the latter. If the room is small and the furniture minimal remember never to put large floor patterns, as this would make the floor too glaring. The floor of one room should be in accordance to the next. If it is too different then one room may look too overdone. Maintenance is very important because amount of day-to-day maintenance you are willing to undertake may influence the choice of your floor. Some materials, such as wood, require more care, especially around a sink, where water can damage the varnish. You may like to have stone tiles around an activity zone, and wood flooring in an areas with less traffic. Flagstones and large terra-cotta tiles in particular suit larger rooms. Lighter shades of color make a room appear larger. Rich, darker tones absorb light and create a warmer, cozier environment in a large room.

For kitchens and bathrooms it would be convenient if you would choose vinyl, linoleum, cork, ceramic, natural stone, concrete, wood and laminate. Carpets and wood would be suitable for living rooms while wool, acrylic, nylon, polyester and olefin would be best suited for bedrooms.

One can be innovative as much as possible but the basics of hygiene and style should be kept in mind at the time of designing your home.
